When It’s Time to Change the Carpet
Preferred Carpet Care is in the business of repairing and cleaning carpets throughout the Redding area. So you would think that we would never tell people it’s time to replace their carpet. But it’s a fact that even the highest quality carpet simply gets worn out after many years of use. As we discuss on our website, cleaning your carpet regularly greatly extends its life. When you consider the following signs that a carpet needs replacing, you’ll see why.
Wear and Tear
Carpet is generally designed to last around ten years in a household of no more than four people. Cheap carpets will wear out faster, but we have also seen high quality carpets that lasted about twenty years. Cleaning reduces the wear on carpet fibers caused by dirt and other sharp particles, but being stomped on 24/7 eventually gets to any piece of fabric and carpet is no different.
Permanent Stains
While we pride ourselves on excellent stain removal, some stains are permanent. If the stain is too old, it can become fixed to the carpet fibers, defying removal. If improper methods were used in an attempt to remove it, the stain can actually be made worse. If a stain is prominent and irremovable, the solution is a throw rug, a carpet insert or replacement.
Water Damage
If water damage is not dealt with promptly, drying out the carpets and carpet pad completely, it’s time to change the carpet. While minor mold and mildew infestations can be conquered, major takeovers of the carpet fibers render the carpet a health hazard and it should be replaced.
Worn Out Carpet Pad
If your carpet has a pad, it too has a functional life. Like carpet, some padding is designed to last longer. Nevertheless, when a carpet starts to get wavy or “noisy” when you walk on it, it may be that the carpet pad is coming apart and needs to be replaced. If you’re replacing the pad, you’d best replace the carpet too.
Fading Color
Sunny rooms are often the sites of carpet fading, especially in a house with older windows that offer little UV protection. When this happens, one part of the carpet looks faded compared to other parts that get little sun. While spot dying of faded sections is possible, major fading is best dealt with by getting a new carpet that has better color fastness, and also getting better windows.
