Steam Cleaning and Mold
Many types of molds that appear in residential homes or businesses in Redding have the potential of becoming health hazards. If found in carpet, mold can be a very difficult thing to remove without professional help, like what you receive from Preferred Carpet Care. But if mold requires moisture to thrive (which it does), and steam cleaning uses plenty of moisture to clean a carpet, does steam cleaning put your carpet in danger of developing mold?
Factors Besides Moisture
While it’s true that mold needs moisture to thrive, it also needs a food source and an undisturbed location. When Preferred Carpet Care performs hot water extraction on your carpet, the hot water flushes out any organisms harboring in your carpet. Not only does the process remove mold, but also any organic material the mold could use as a food source. In effect, steam cleaning your carpet also sanitizes your carpet, leaving your carpet fresh, clean, and clear of mold or its food sources.
What About After Steam Cleaning?
Would the moisture left behind after steam cleaning attract mold? Well, no – the presence of moisture does not attract mold spores. When mold spores are released, they stay in the air for some time until gravity settles them in a random location. It depends on the state of that location as to whether the mold grows. Additionally, mold needs its environment to stay moist for 24 to 48 hours. The methods used by Preferred Carpet Care make sure that your carpet does not stay moist for any longer than 12 hours – less than half the time molds needs to grow. We also use industrial fans and other equipment to reduce that time even further.
But it is important to make sure there are no areas underneath or adjacent to your carpet that stay moist for extended periods of time. If you’ve had mold in your home before, make sure to repair whatever caused moisture to settle there in the first place. Removing the source of moisture is the best way to ensure that mold does not return! If you find more mold, have a mold remediation professional inspect your home or send them a sample to analyze.
