Let’s first discuss a few tidbits of information about this specific type of fungus. Mold usually grows on “hidden” surfaces, such as behind wallpaper, drywall, or paneling and in attics or basements, but sometimes even on or around HVAC systems. The other factor is that mold requires a damp environment. Therefore, the most common cause of mold is either a roof or plumbing leak. Typically there is more mold hiding behind the surface and most homeowners don’t know it’s there until the situation is too big for them to handle.
Mold Prevention
The key to controlling mold is moisture control — stop it from the source! Fix leaky plumbing or patch up holes in the roof. Reduce humidity by using ventilation in bathrooms and while running dryers. Use exhaust fans whenever cooking or cleaning. It is a good idea to have your air ducts regularly cleaned. If not, the HVAC unit sends mold spores circulating through vents and back into your home.
What To Do If You Find Mold
If you do see signs of mold, don’t do anything until you have a professional retrieve a test sample to tell you what level of harm it may cause. Certain types of mold have serious health risks, whereas other types may be cleaned with soap and water. (Keep in mind, before you removed what you saw, the mold may have sent off spores that disburse and float onto other surfaces and spread even more.) If the mold has been tested and deemed “harmful,” call Preferred Carpet Care of Redding to remediate the fungi.
