Points to Consider When Buying Carpet
Preferred Carpet Care has decades of experience in cleaning and maintaining different types of carpet in homes and businesses. We know how to keep carpet looking its best! But the average consumer might not realize how much variety and choice is available when choosing the right carpet. Let’s go over a few categories pertaining to carpet choices and the options available to you.
Carpet Structure
Most carpets fall into three different categories of carpet pile (the fabric strands of yarn or fibers that make up your carpeting). Loop pile has the yarn fastened to the carpet backing on both ends, creating a loop. Cut pile has only one end fastened to the backing. But some carpet manufacturers offer a combination of both looped and cut fibers. Each offers a different texture and needs to be considered when performing maintenance.
Another structural characteristic is how the pile is attached to the carpet backing. In the past, woven methods were preferred, but they are labor-intensive and time consuming, leading to higher cost for a quality product. This method is typically used with wool carpets. Most carpets today are tufted, meaning they are sewn onto the carpet backing by a machine. This works very well for nylon and polyester carpets and provides greater economy.
Another category is manufacturing material. Three types dominate the market: wool, nylon, and polyester. Each has its own pros and cons. When considering what material is best for you, consider what texture you’d like, resistance to moisture and stains, possible allergic reactions, amount of foot traffic, and cost.
Carpet Colors and Patterns
The variety of color for carpet is nearly endless! Many carpets feature multiple colors to create appealing patterns. If you expect spills and cleanup on a regular basis, some styles are obviously better than others. Color hue and pattern size can affect the perception of a room, so its advised to consult with an interior designer before making a final choice.
Carpet Maintenance
How long a carpet retains its appearance largely depends on how it’s made and how it’s used. The tightness of the pile settings, the type of yarn, and the padding underneath the carpet are all contributing factors. Nevertheless, the amount of walking or jostling of furniture can also have a strong effect on your carpet. When choosing a carpet, consider how much activity it will see.
But even more important is maintenance and cleaning. Make sure to vacuum your carpet weekly, and always have your carpet professionally cleaned on a regular basis. At Preferred Carpet Care, we use our years of skill, experience, and training to identify any issues with your carpet pile, the backing and padding, and even the amount of wear it’s seen between cleanings. We use top-notch equipment and family-safe solvents (as well as methods like hot water extraction and encapsulation) to give your carpet the best cleaning possible and keep it looking fantastic for years.
