Designers looking for a natural element that sparks memories of Asia or Latin America often use floor coverings with fibers derived from. Jute, sisal, hemp, seagrass, coir, abaca and flax are all processed from dried leaves or husks. While these fibers have the advantage of being “green” and generally chemical-free, they also have particular caveats that you should know about.
Please Don’t Spill
Unlike wool and synthetics, plant fibers are great at absorbing liquids. As a result, they stain easily. Plan on using these floor coverings only in areas where they are not likely to contact liquids. Therefore, entrances, kitchens, dining rooms, outdoor areas and bathrooms are out if you want low stress and less maintenance. Not so Durable
Natural plant fibers will last just fine with ordinary use, but they are not designed for heavy traffic. Durability is one of the reasons why synthetic ropes have replaced natural fiber ropes for industrial uses and seafaring. Synthetic fiber carpets give you that same benefit over plant fiber floor coverings. Nevertheless, when plant fibers are chosen for floor coverings, the enjoyable look, feel, texture and scent are often deciding factors, not how long they might last.
Never Steam or Shampo
Traditional carpet cleaning methods should never be used on plant materials (with the exception of cotton), even if you have installed them in a wall-to-wall fashion.
