Tips for Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Ah yes, it’s that wonderful time of the year when we all look around at the clutter and disarray invading our home and run out of excuses for why we can’t get to it. Of course, the COVID pandemic has caused an increase in our stay at home time, as well as a decrease in our excuses for not being around the house to eliminate the clutter. The solution may be a hearty round of spring cleaning!

In truth, spring cleaning is a very important task. It helps us find lost items and it encourages us to put things away so we can find them again. It gives us the opportunity to rearrange furniture and to freshen up our décor. And it helps us clean allergens and dust from the home, so they don’t aggravate our allergies. Nevertheless, with all the events of the last year, we might be a bit overwhelmed as to where we can start, let alone continue or finish. So, here’s a few ideas to get us going with spring cleaning.

Put Things Away

Start with light objects like blankets, clothes, wrappers and books. They were once in a different location, right? Well, put them back in those locations — except for things like dirty clothes and trash. The clothes go in the laundry bin, and the wrappers go in the trash. Put TV remotes in a secure location for now, but make sure not to activate them. In the words of a famous sci-fi alien admiral: “It’s a trap!”

Follow Gravity

Start high and work your way down. Begin dusting tall shelves and storage areas, letting the dirt and dust trickle downwards. Since we’re all so used to wearing face masks now, it’s a good idea to wear one when doing this, so you don’t take a deep breath of dust. Dust and wash curtains and windows, again working from top to bottom when appropriate. Make sure to vacuum your window seals and tracks as well. Wipe down counters and tables. When it comes to furniture, you can fluff and flip your cushions away from their usual positions to remove any lodged particles. This also brings any accumulated dust out of the furniture and toward the floor.

If you followed gravity, most of the dirt and dust you’ve dislocated will be on the carpets, rugs and flooring. Begin by vacuuming large open areas to get rid of as much of the dislodged pollutants as you can. Move on to area rugs. You can vacuum them or take them out for a shake. Shake them outside to remove accumulated contaminants or hang them over a sturdy object as you take the backside of a broom to them. Or if you prefer, call Preferred Carpet Care to get them exceptionally clean without the hassle of dust inhalation.

To the Carpet!

Before you put your area rugs back in place, decide if you want to move any furniture to liven up the room. If you plan to do so, have Preferred Carpet Care perform a thorough cleaning of your carpet before you reposition everything. Once you remove the fixtures from the room, we clean the carpet. Afterward, you can place your belongings in their new position without any concern of “placement shadows” throwing off the feel of the room.

To the Mattresses!

One item that gets frequently overlooked is your mattress. After all, it’s typically not in your living room or den. Even so, it’s a vital component to your life, and you spend about a third of your day there, so it’s important that it gets the same level of attention as the rest of your home. Preferred Carpet Care offers a deep mattress cleaning to make sure skin cells and mites get removed, and your mattress stays clean.

This might sound like a lot of work, and it is — you’ll probably need to divvy it up over a few days. Of course, having Preferred Carpet Care help with things like carpets, rugs, tile and grout, mattresses, and upholstery will lighten the load considerably. What’s more, the results are well worth it. You can take a deep breath of satisfaction, knowing you won’t cough or sneeze as a result. You can look around your home and appreciate the clean, tidy, immaculate results of your endeavors.
