Many members of the common American household today prefer to use the bathroom sink and mirror for applying makeup. Sometimes it’s simply more convenient than using a vanity – and in truth, a tile or linoleum floor is less subject to spills. However, there’s something to be said about a special place with all your makeup organized and within reach, where you don’t have to lean over a wet sink to apply it. Of course, a challenge comes when your makeup topples from the vanity and meets the carpet.
One type of makeup that can be difficult to clean up is eye shadow. Many eye shadows are oil-based, which makes them resistant to cleanup attempts. After all, it’s meant to stay put on your face. Powder-based eye shadows are typically a little easier.
Prompt Action is Needed
The sooner you clean up the stain, the better.
- For powder versions, slowly and gently use your vacuum – preferably with an upholstery accessory attached – to remove as much of the powder as possible. It’s possible this step alone may remove the powder residue. However, if the spot is still there, mix ¼ teaspoon of clear dishwashing detergent (containing no bleach or lanolin) with a quart of water. Dab and blot the mix into the spill from the outside edges inward. Rinse with water from a spray bottle and use weighted paper towels to dry the area
- Oil-based liquid versions are more challenging. They still require the same prompt action, but do not use a vacuum cleaner, as it could smear the spill and make things worse – both on your carpet and in your vacuum. Instead, use a spoon, dull knife, or another firm edge to very carefully remove any excess, so it doesn’t get pulled down into the fibers.
Proceeding with Oil-based Eye Shadow
Now, we need to work the rest of the spill out of the carpet. Continue by pouring rubbing alcohol onto a clean white cloth or paper towel, and then dab the spot from the outside edges inward. Be careful not to pour the alcohol directly onto the spot, as it could deteriorate the backing of your carpet. Continue blotting the spot until there is no more color transference to the cloth or towel.
If the stain persists, use your handy mix of ¼ dishwashing detergent with a quart of water and start your dip, dab, and blot method with a clean white cloth. Once the color is no longer transferring over to the cloth or the stain appears to be gone, rinse the area with water from a spray bottle. Blot it dry, and then apply some weighted towels to soak up any remaining moisture.
If the stain persists, moisten the fibers in the spot with 3% hydrogen peroxide and let it sit there for an hour. Blot and repeat until the spot is no longer present, and then apply weighted towels to soak up any residue.
What About Makeup Remover?
There are reports that using makeup remover pads to blot the stain removes it just as well as dishwashing detergent. That seems likely since makeup remover pads were designed to remove makeup. However, some types use chemicals that are not compatible with carpet fibers and might result in bleaching or discoloration. If you chose to try them, do so with extreme caution.
