Types of Carpet Pile
Carpet pile is typically looped or cut to a certain length and then twisted to stay in place. Roughly speaking, the more twisted it is the more durable it is. The difference in styles also opens the way for different textures. This means some piles resist dirt more easily while others are soft and cozy. When you consider who will be walking on the carpet, how often, and even what the room will be used for, choosing the right kind of pile becomes easier. Here are some general types.
- Cut Pile – This pile has straight strands of yarn or fiber that is cut and then twisted to hold its shape and position. Many styles use heat or other methods to set the pile. - Level Loop – This pile features twisted loops that are all the same height, typically offering a more rigid texture than cut pile. This might not be as aesthetically pleasing, and perhaps not as comforting to walk on in your bare feet, but its durability is high, making it more resistant to stains and spills. You’ll find this pile being used more in commercial offices, but if you have it in your home, it is typically accompanied by a thicker padding underneath to add a softer feel underfoot.
- Patterned Loop – using loops of varied sizes, this pile is designed to create a texture or pattern in the carpet. Sometimes you will find versions of patterned loop pile in family rooms or areas where guests are met. It can catch on pet claws easily, so be careful.
- Cut-Loop Pile – like the name suggests, this is a combination of cut and looped pile. It offers a wide variety of textures and patterns, but also less durable and will show wear quicker than either of the others.
