How Long Can Carpet Be Wet?

Moisture

This is a common question our technicians receive when we provide professional carpet cleaning to the greater Redding area. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) sets the proper cleaning standards for our industry. According to them, it is recommended that drying take place within 6-8 hours but not to exceed 24 hours. Keeping drying time within this window helps to prevent after cleaning complications such as microbial growth and the odor that comes with it.

How Can You Speed Up the Drying Process?

Here are a few steps that you can take to help speed up this drying process after your carpet has been cleaned:

  1. Set your thermostat to between 72-78 degrees. The warmer it is, the faster the water will evaporate.
  2. Air movement is key. If you have ceiling fans, these should be set on high and left on until the carpets are fully dry.
  3. Set your central fan system to the on position.
  4. If you have no fans and the temperature outside is pleasant, you can open windows to help with airflow and to get rid of excess moisture.

Is Steam Cleaning Worth the Wait?

Some people might opt to choose dry cleaning so as to not have as long of a dry time. However, dry cleaning your carpet can be compared to dry shampooing your hair. It might get it a little cleaner, but for a deeper clean, there is nothing better than fully washing it!
