Common Scents

Common Scents

We live in an organic world. Things get biologically created or produced, and over time they break down. If left alone during that breakdown period, organic matter often develops an odor, which invariably tickles our nose in a not-so-pleasant way. Now, as we go out and about from our homes, our noses get a respite, and then when we return, we’re more likely to notice that odor and do something about it.

However, times have changed, haven’t they? Most of us are spending much more time at home. As we do so, our noses become accustomed to the ambient odors. It’s reasonable to conclude that we might not notice how strong they get. And, logically, if we don’t notice them anymore, we’re less likely to take care of them.

Odor Builders

Your carpet is the largest air filter in your home. As dust and dirt particles follow gravity’s pull, they settle into the fibers of your pile. But some of these microscopic particles are also organic – things like skin flakes, hair, or even leftovers from passing insects. Germs and bacteria also come into play, often helping to break down that organic material. And of course, there’s the occasional spill or accident, bringing a stain to the carpet as well as possible lingering aromas.

Contrary to marketing claims, spraying your carpet with chemical “breezes” might counteract the odors, but that’s all they can do. It’s the same with carpet powders – they alleviate the offensive aromas, and that’s about it. As a result, the odors commonly return. Even wiping up a spill or stain isn’t enough, depending on how deep into your carpet the spill reached.

Odor Removers

Simply put, the best way to get rid of the offensive smells is to remove the source material. When the material is in your carpet, an effective treatment is vacuuming. However, that’s often only a temporary measure. That’s because dust, dirt, insects, and other odor producers can waft their way under furniture and bookcases, into tight corners, and other places where your vacuum cannot reach. Very few people are willing to move ottomans or TV trays when vacuuming, let alone sofas and tables. Yet, over time, those areas are where odor producers will accumulate.

By far, the best option to take care of odors – or even the possibility of odors, in case you’ve gotten used to them – is a thorough carpet cleaning. Thankfully, Preferred Carpet Care offers exactly that. We have techniques, equipment, and years of skill and experience to cover every centimeter of your carpet, removing any accumulation of biomaterial that could produce unpleasant smells.
