Hot Water Extraction is by far the most common technique used by professional carpet cleaners. It’s also known as steam cleaning, but that’s a bit misleading. Although the hot water might produce a small amount of steam, the process does not technically use any steam to clean. Even so, many companies still advertise it as steam cleaning, even in their names, so home and business owners can relate to their prime method of carpet cleaning.
The Prime Method
The process starts with the application of a cleaning agent or solvent on the carpet. This agent liquifies and displaces soil, debris, allergens and other particulates trapped among the carpet fibers. Recently, some professionals have incorporated encapsulation options to this part of the procedure. In some instances, however, the hot water used later might compromise the bonding ability of encapsulation, which is why it’s best to leave such decisions up to the professionals.
After applying the solvent, the professional might opt to use agitation to get the solvent deeper into the carpet. Again, when to use this option is learned through extensive training and experience. After a short resting period, the professional uses a specialized wand to apply hot water under high pressure. It runs deep into your carpet fibers to wash away the cleaning agents and all the soil it has dislodged.
The Pros of Hot Water Extraction
Hot water extraction is the best choice for allergy sufferers or those sensitive to chemicals or detergents. The hot water also kills bacteria, molds, germs, mites, and other irritants while removing them. It provides a deep clean for your carpet. With the right equipment, this cleaning goes as deep as the carpet backing.
While washing out all the dirt and debris, the hot water “fluffs” your carpet fibers – which is nice if they were matted down. Most carpet manufacturers recommend this method due to its success and reliability. Using other methods could void the warranty with a new carpet.
The Cons of Hot Water Extraction
With so many companies offering this cleaning method it can be tricky to know who to choose for this service. Sadly, not all companies use this method correctly. Some cut costs with low-end equipment or cleaning agents while others don’t have proper training or skill. The most difficult challenge with this method is time. It will take time for the carpets to dry after using hot water to clean them thoroughly. Many offices prefer to use this method at the end of the business, giving the carpets plenty of time to dry overnight. Large fans can be used to circulate the air and reduce drying time.
