Absorbent Compound Cleaning
“Dry Carpet” cleaning, or absorbent compound cleaning, was first offered in the 1980’s, promoting a more modern and eco-friendly option to clean your carpets as compared to its older brothers. Since its introduction, dry carpet cleaning has gained popularity with offices and commercial businesses with limited standby time.
The name “dry carpet” is a bit of a misnomer, however, as there is usually moisture or sprays of water involved. Using chemical compounds or powders mixed with solvents spread over the carpet, dry cleaning uses specialized machines with counter-rotating brushes to work the mixture into the carpet. While sitting for 10 to 15 minutes, the mixture absorbs dirt, allergens, soil, and other particulates. The same machine is typically used to vacuum the mixture up, or another specialized vacuum might be preferred.
The method is both simple and safe to use on nearly all types of carpet, with little or no training required. The specialized machinery helps the mixture penetrate deep into the carpet pile, absorbing particulates that might not otherwise be removed. If any moisture is left behind, it evaporates quickly –within 20 minutes of finishing the procedure. As a result, this method is sometimes effective for businesses that are open late, inaccessible after hours, or offer 24-hour service.
Dry Cleaning Challenges
Although typically made from biodegradable materials, the chemicals used in dry carpet cleaning are often very strong to break down stains and spills. There may be residual odors that could affect your employees or customers. If you choose this method, it’s a good idea to research the product or service and make sure you have an understanding of the chemicals involved.
Since the method uses specialized equipment and chemical mixtures, price is often higher than other carpet cleaning methods. Purchasing the equipment is often a high initial cost. Likewise, hiring a professional dry carpet cleaning service typically has higher rates than more traditional methods. Not only that, but these specialized machines and compounds are not usually interchangeable. If you buy one type of machine, you’ll need to purchase their version of absorbent compound exclusively to work with that machine.

Absorbent compound cleaning is an efficient way of getting your carpets cleaned when you don’t have a lot of time for off-hours, but it often makes up the difference when you get the bill.
