A Spot Removal Tip for Carpets

Carpet Spotting Tip

Retail stores sell many different types of spot removers. Caution with these products is required, because misuse or improper use of any of these formulas can actually do more damage to your carpet. Preferred Carpet Care of Redding is always willing to assist our customers by doing the job right, but if you get in a tight “spot” and need to remove a stain yourself, there are basic principles to “apply” in order to do the job right.

Where to Put the Stain Remover?

In a previous article, we talked about the importance of always blotting, not rubbing, when dealing with spots. Now we address the question: Where do you put the stain remover? Using the correct procedure can save you heartache later.

First, if you’ve never used a carpet stain remover on a specific rug or carpet before, you should test an inconspicuous part of the material to make certain that the remover does not cause fading or bleaching of your fibers. Ideally, this should be done shortly after buying the product, not when a stain is working its way into your carpet fibers. If the stain remover passes that part of the test, you can move on to the next step, actually using it on a stain.

At this point you want to make certain that you are using a clean, preferably white cloth. Add the stain remover to the cloth, not directly to the rug or carpet. This is extremely important, to make certain that you do not oversaturate the carpet with spot remover. While spot removers for clothing use a different procedure, here you’re cleaning a carpet. So never mistake the procedure for cleaning a shirt with the steps for cleaning a rug.
